-   February **Chinese New Year** Lion dances and parades in Chinatown, around the Nieuwmarkt.
-   5 May **Liberation Day concert** A free evening concert on a floating stage on the Amstel.
-   August **Grachtenfestival** Ten days of classical concerts at canal-side locations, from chamber music to open-air shows.
-   August **Hartjesdag** A colourful street party in the Zeedijk area, with costumes and music.
-   September **Open Monumentendag** Historic buildings that are normally closed open their doors, free.
-   September **Dam tot Damloop** A big running race from Amsterdam to Zaandam, with thousands of runners.
-   October **Amsterdam Marathon** One of the biggest sports days of the year, with runners from all over the world.
-   November **Sinterklaas arrives** Sinterklaas sails into the city by boat, with families all along the canals.
-   31 December **New Year’s Eve** Fireworks all over the city. From our island you look out over the IJ.
